#Blackburn Mosque teacher guilty of assaults on boys #edl

A man who taught children to read the Quran at a mosque in Blackburn has been found guilty of beating two of them.

Kurram Hussain, 26, of Granville Road, Blackburn, Lancashire, had denied two charges of assault by beating, relating to two boys aged 10 and 11.

He was accused of three charges of assault but one was dropped when a witness failed to turn up at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court.

Hussain is due to be sentenced at the same court on 17 August.

The court heard Hussain taught schoolchildren aged between five and 12 years old how to read the Quran every weekday evening.

‘Slapped around head’

But when they talked amongst themselves or misbehaved, he used physical violence.

The first boy to give evidence against him said he had been assaulted by Hussain since 2008.

He said he had been slapped around the head, hit on the hands with a pencil and called names.

The second witness said they were regularly punished and that he had seen Hussain kick one of the boys in the back.

In mitigation, Hussain admitted he was a strict disciplinarian and when the boys misbehaved he would give them detention.

He said he followed the mosque’s strict zero tolerance to violence policy.

After being in a wonderful mood due to our two Gold metals (again go TEAMGB ) I read that our Policewomen now have to wear head cover when entering a Mosque for fear of offending…as this is the case of course they would have to wear the appropriate head attire when entering a place of worship for all religions…a Synagogue, a Temple, a Cross when entering a Church ??????……. OF COURSE NOT…..as no other religion is pacified or, indeed, NEEDS to be pacified…..one more nail in the coffin of our wonderful Country.

On that note…here’s to more Golds tomorrow.

UPDATE: Man accused of sexual activity with child is named

gen_wycombemagsAn unemployed 25-year-old has been accused of involvement in an alleged child sex ring.

Balel Ahmed, of Suffolk Road, Maidenhead, appeared before High Wycombe magistrates’ today charged with conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child and sexual activity with a child.

He was arrested as part of Operation Bullfinch – an investigation into grooming, child rape and trafficking involving more than 20 girls aged between 11 and 16 in Oxford.Thames Valley Police launched the operation in March, executing 14 warrants.

Bullfinch is the result of a joint probe by police and Oxfordshire County Council’s children, education and families department.

Ahmed, who has short dark hair and a beard and was dressed in a black T-shirt and tracksuit trousers, waved to his brother-in-law and dad as he walked into the dock.

The stocky former telesales worker, who is now out of work, spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.

He sat with his arms crossed for much of the hearing.

Prosecutor Peter Bird said the offences had taken place between January 10, 2010, and January 9, 2012.

Ahmed was remanded in custody.

He will appear at either The Old Bailey in London or Aylesbury Crown Court on Friday, August 3.

Ahmed, who grew up in Maidenhead, is the cousin of co-defendant Zeshan Ahmed, 26, of Palmer Road, Headington, Oxford, who has already been charged with 10 counts of sexual activity with a child as part of Bullfinch.

Exclusive: Oldham corner shop worker tried to cheat 77-year old gran out of £1m lottery win

HIT THE JACKPOT: Maureen and Fred Holt scooped the jackpot after the attempted con by newsagent Farakh Nizzar was uncoveredHIT THE JACKPOT: Maureen and Fred Holt scooped the jackpot after the attempted con by newsagent Farakh Nizzar was uncovered
<respond_button adunit=”4″ buttontype=”2″ title=”news Exclusive: Oldham corner shop worker tried to cheat 77-year old gran out of £1m lottery win” keyword=”Exclusive: Oldham corner shop worker tried to cheat 77-year old gran out of £1m lottery win” category=”news” id=”1″>A devious shopworker has admitted trying to cheat a great-gran out of a £1 million lottery jackpot.

Farrakh Nizzar told Maureen Holt, 77, that her ticket was worthless when she popped into her local corner shop to check if she had won a prize.

But the numbers actually matched up to a seven-figure jackpot.

Nizzar, 30, told her he would bin the ticket – then tried to use it to claim the money for himself.

Camelot investigators realised he was not the genuine winner after carrying out a series of security checks – and called in police.

Nizzar has now admitted fraud, and Maureen is in line to become a millionaire.

Lottery gran on conman: ‘Everyone calls him Lucky but he wasn’t very lucky this time’

The mum-of-seven, whose husband Fred, 80, still works for a security firm, said: “I just can’t believe he did this, but at least he got caught.

“This money will mean my husband can finally give up work and we can enjoy our retirement.”

Maureen fell victim to the con when she went into the Best One Convenience Store in Watersheddings Street, Oldham.

She and Fred had been on holiday in Spain when the Euromillions draw was made and had missed the winning numbers, so she asked Nizzar to check it for her.

Nizzar scanned the ticket into a Camelot lottery machine which, it is understood immediately confirmed that the numbers matched those in the millionaire’s raffle held eight days earlier. But Nizzar told Maureen she did not have a winning ticket and she left the shop oblivious to the fact she had missed out on a £1 million fortune.

Nizzar then phoned a lottery hotline and tried to claim the jackpot, saying he had bought the ticket at the Best One shop.

Camelot quizzed him about the ticket and exposed his lie when they found it had been bought at a Tesco Extra store in Huddersfield Road.

Luckily, they were able to trace Maureen because she had used her Tesco Clubcard when she bought the ticket, and the store had her contact details. CCTV footage also confirmed she had bought it.

The winning ticket has not been recovered from Nizzar and Camelot have told Maureen she will only get the payout once they are fully satisfied she’s a genuine winner.

Nizzar, of Woodlands Road, Crumpsall, went on the run when he realised he had been rumbled, telling his bosses he was going away on holiday.

He was arrested and detained by police in nearby Chadderton when his car activated a police number plate recognition system.

Nizzar, who had told friends he was about to return to his native Pakistan, appeared at Oldham magistrates court and admitted committing fraud by false representation.

He will be sentenced at Minshull Street Crown court on August 20.

Det Insp Danny Inglis said: “We have worked very closely with Camelot throughout this investigation and will continue to do so during the remainder of the judicial process.”

Camelot confirmed it had received an ‘alternative’ claim on the prize but a spokesman said it would be inappropriate to comment on any individual claim due to the ongoing legal proceedings.

At least some police can see that Twitter arrests are ridiculous #edl #tomdaley

We can’t control Twitter, insist police: Storm over

arrest of 17-year-old for ‘offensive’ tweets about Tom

Daley

  • Officers asked to look at content 14,000 times on Facebook alone last year
  • Reece Messer, 17, handed harassment warning by Dorset Police
  • Officers still investigating other messages posted on his Twitter feed
  • Police leaders: Forces are dragged into too many petty social media rows

Police admitted last night that they are being dragged into too many Twitter disputes as a row raged over the decision to arrest a youth who abused Olympic diving star Tom Daley.

Officers swooped on the home of Reece Messer, 17, at 2.45am yesterday, hours after he told the sports star he had ‘let down’  his late father in Monday’s synchronised ten metre final.

Messer also threatened to ‘drown’ the 18-year-old but backtracked and apologised when his messages provoked an online storm.

Last night, as Dorset police handed the troubled teenager a formal harassment warning, police leaders claimed forces are being dragged into too many petty social media rows.

Officers were asked to look at content 14,000 times on Facebook alone last year and Simon Reed, vice-chairman of the Police Federation, which represents rank and file officers,  said forces do not have the resources to monitor the internet.

He said: ‘There is legislation which concerns causing harassment, alarm or distress. But can we police the internet when someone upsets someone else?

‘I don’t think we have the resources to do that. We can’t have a free-for-all online but we cannot involve the police every time something unpleasant is said.’

But Stuart Hyde, chief constable of Cumbria and the Association of Chief Police Officers spokesman on social media, said: ‘Social media is increasingly part of police business and the law covers situations where you have comment that goes way beyond legitimate opinion.

‘We don’t just deal with people who are famous. People have the right to freedom of speech but it has to be within the law.’

The episode is an embarrassment for Games bosses who dubbed the extravaganza the ‘social media Olympics’.

Daley did not make a formal complaint  about the series of tweets. Reece Messer was arrested after a complaint from a member of the public.

He was on police bail last night, but he could still face up to six months in prison for offences under the Malicious Communications Act after officers said they were investigating the rest of his Twitter account.

A harassment warning can  be issued under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997. It is not a criminal conviction but will appear on an enhanced criminal records check.

Reece’s family protested that he is a drop-out who has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and ‘needs help  not punishment’.

His father Norman Messer, 58, apologised to Daley. He said his son has a psychiatric problem and ‘badly needs help’ but has no incentive to sort out his life because of his lavish benefits.

At his home in Boscombe, near Bournemouth, the carpet cleaner said: ‘I’m quite shocked. Reece badly needs help. I’m heartbroken this has happened to him.

1980s law

‘I think the police should be involved, but he doesn’t know what he’s saying. He just doesn’t think about it.

‘We’ve had a long history with Reece. It all started when he was about eight years old, he was quite normal up to that point.

‘Then he started going to school, insulting the other children, saying things like “Your mum’s a prostitute” to the other little boys. After that there were other problems in school.

‘He’s just gone off the rails. He suffers from ADHD. But he won’t take his medication.

‘I just want to say sorry to Tom Daley and wish him every success in the future.’

Mr Messer explained that he and Reece’s mother split up when Reece was 12 months old, and she now lives in Stockport. The controversy began after Daley and partner Pete Waterfield, 31, came fourth in the synchronised ten metre platform dive.

In a Twitter message, Reece  told the young diver whose father died of a brain tumour last year: ‘You let your dad down i hope you know that.’

Daley forwarded the abuse  from ‘Rileyy_69’ and commented to his 850,000 followers: ‘After  giving it my all . . . you get idiots sending me this.’

Thousands of Twitter users rushed to support Daley and identified the abuser.

This provoked a series of messages in which Reece apologised to the sports star but then threatened to ‘drown you’ and called him a ‘cocky t**t’.

One message said: ‘@TomDaley1994 I’m sorry mate i just wanted you to win cause its the olympics I’m just annoyed we didn’t win I’m sorry tom accept my apology.’

He added: ‘please i don’t want to be hated I’m just sorry you didn’t win i was rooting for you pal to do britain all proud just so upset.’

It is understood that the threat of violence led police to arrest Reece at a bedsit in Weymouth.

Daley’s close friend and Team GB diving team-mate Tonia Couch, whom Daley watched compete yesterday, suggested the exchange of comments would swiftly be forgotten.

She said: ‘Tom’s a strong boy. He can concentrate on what he needs to do and, at the end of the day, Twitter’s Twitter. You don’t need to look at it if you don’t want to.’

Asked what she made of the abuse, she added: ‘Not much really, neither has Tom. We’re just concentrating on the Olympics.’

Team GB gymnast Louis Smith said ignoring Twitter is probably the best policy for athletes trying to win an Olympic medal.

He said: ‘There are just tweets that you do not want to see.  Some people are not bothered by negative tweets and they can go about their day, but if you are going to take it personally then do not do it.’

What about teachers who belong to extreme left wing groups? #edl #casualsunited

Teachers who belong to far-right groups could be

Scotland’s teaching regulator is facing calls to strike off members of the profession with links to far-right groups such as the British National Party and the Scottish Defence League.

Members of the country’s largest teaching union, the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), have tabled a motion to their upcoming AGM calling on the General Teaching Council for Scotland and the Scottish Government to “minimise the influence” of such groups in schools.

However, it is expected that delegates at this week’s meeting will go a step further and call for members of the profession with links to extremist groups to be removed from the teaching register.

Currently, teachers working in Scotland’s schools do not have to declare whether they are the member of a political party or other such group.

The General Teaching Council for England was axed after it failed to take action against a BNP activist who described immigrants as “savage animals” on an internet forum.

Michael Gove, the UK government’s education secretary, said the organisation had “failed to protect” children from extremism by allowing Adam Walker, a technology teacher from County Durham, to remain on the teaching register.

The motion going before this week’s EIS AGM calls on the union to condemn the activities of the BNP and SDL and approach the Scottish Government and GTCS “with a view to identifying means by which the influence of such organisations could be minimised within all educational establishments in Scotland”.

A GTCS spokesman said: “GTC Scotland recognises the democratic principles of freedom of expression and fairness, and the right of a teacher to have a private life. Consequently, the privately held political preferences of a teacher are not normally of interest for GTC Scotland.

“However, the GTC Scotland code of professionalism and conduct establishes very clear expectations of the professional behaviour of teachers; and any breach of the code can lead to a requirement for GTC Scotland to investigate the fitness to teach of an individual teacher.

“GTC Scotland would certainly be concerned if a teacher became involved in activities which are inconsistent with the code and/or if there were evidence that unsuitable or inappropriate material or attitudes had been shared with pupils. In particular, GTC Scotland would never condone the expression of racist or other inappropriate views in the classroom and would view seriously any attempt by a teacher to impose extreme views on pupils.”

Among the other motions set to be discussed by the union is one condemning the “abuse and harassment” faced by teachers through the internet and social networking sites.

It calls on internet service providers to take action against any sites found to be hosting such material.
